There is something about the idea of setting sail: a new coastline to explore, a quiet anchorage for the night, and the freedom to stay a little longer. Cruising Freedom is for people drawn to that life, whether you are learning the basics or planning a longer voyage.
Where it all began
Joshua Lee founded Cruising Freedom in September 2020 with a simple aim: to help people start sailing and work towards the dream of cruising the world. The site began on Australia’s Sunshine Coast, with the Great Barrier Reef, Fraser Island, Moreton Bay and the Gold Coast close to its heart.
Joshua’s own dream of sailing around the world went back to his school years. Later, the journeys shared by SV Delos and Sailing La Vagabonde helped fuel that ambition. That mix of practical curiosity and inspiration from other sailors still shapes what you will find here.
Helping you find your way onto the water
We cover sailing basics, coastal and offshore cruising, boats and equipment, and destinations worth getting to know. You will also find stories about people making a life under sail, alongside updates from the wider cruising world.
Our starting point is the same as it was at the beginning: a good adventure needs a solid foundation. Learning the skills, understanding your boat and working out how to fund your time afloat are all part of the journey. We want to help you think through those steps while keeping the excitement of the voyage ahead.

Today, Cruising Freedom is managed and operated by Humble Atlas (The Ordinary Trade Pty Ltd). Joshua Lee remains credited as our founder and is no longer the editor.
